2016 Indian Scout
My first heavyweight bike. Bought the 6 month old Scout in November 2016 privately from a guy in Wales who decided he didn't like the colour. I was foolish - it was very cold and I wasn't prepared. I didn't have the right clothing and the guy looked genuinely worried for me as I sat nervously on the bike. However, he had pocketed the money so he waved me off with a smile. I nearly came off 100 yards down the road when I totally underestimated the pulling power of the 1198cc engine at a junction. I still have no idea how I stayed on.
The ride back was cold and wet and more miserable than a stuffed badger. I had reasoned I'd collect the bike at lunch and be back in Surrey long before it got dark. But after all the shenanigans with insurance, tax etc. I didn't get away till after lunch and I could not bring myself to ride over 45 mph. |
It was pitiful. I was insanely nervous - my bike tour across West USA was six months previous and I seemed to have forgotten everything I learnt. Which wasn't much I grant you but I'm sure I got up to speeds nearer 50...
And then it got dark. The coldness in my digits was incredibly painful, like holding on to two ice pops till they burn into you with their raspberry flavoured deliciousness. I stopped and warmed them on the exhaust and nearly melted my gloves. I know I know, stuuupid. It was when the shaking didn't stop I decided to call for reinforcements. My son came to the rescue, driving up to Swindon to take over and ride the bike back. His grin was palpable. But we made it and I've had many happy times on my Indian, touring Germany, Belgium, France and day trips to the South coast. Who says you can't tour with an Indian? But best avoid the potholes. |
